When oil is placed into an engine, it goes in with a set viscosity, over time this viscosity diminishes and therefore can not continue to produce optimal lubrication of key components within the engine. Over time if these components do not receive proper lubrication, you may find that after turning your engine off at night, you come to start it in the morning only to find the engine has seized and it has now become a very costly repair.
Having your engine oil and engine oil filter changed, at least as often as recommended by the manufacturer, is likely to generate the single biggest return on your routine-maintenance investment. Replacing the dirty oil and filter will help protect the internal parts of the engine from premature wear.
